The selection of an emergency power installation is based on the so-called critical power need. In other words how much electric power is required for the primary activities and processes? Apart from electric capacity of the unit, the start-up time requirement is determined. This can range from millisecond for data enters to typically minutes for a factory. Finally the operating time of the emergency power system needs to be determined. This could mean minutes to enable to safely shut down computers or could mean continued operation for as long as the utility power interruption lasts.
